The Ugandan Wildlife Education Centre

The Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (UWEC) is a conservation and education facility located in Entebbe, Uganda. Originally established in 1952 as a zoo, it has since evolved into a leading centre for wildlife rescue, rehabilitation, and conservation education.

Key Functions of UWEC:

​

  1. Wildlife Conservation & Rescue – The centre rescues and rehabilitates injured, orphaned, and confiscated wild animals.

  2. Education & Awareness – UWEC provides educational programmes to raise awareness about Uganda’s biodiversity and the importance of conservation.

  3. Tourism & Recreation – Visitors can observe a variety of native wildlife, including lions, giraffes, chimpanzees, and rhinos, in a semi-natural environment.

  4. Research & Breeding Programmes – The centre participates in conservation breeding initiatives for endangered species.

  5. Community Engagement – UWEC works with local communities to promote sustainable conservation practices.

The centre offers interactive experiences, including guided tours, behind-the-scenes encounters, and volunteering opportunities, allowing visitors to learn more about Uganda’s rich wildlife heritage.
