SANCCOB (The South African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds) is a prominent wildlife organisation based in South Africa, focused on the rehabilitation and conservation of seabirds, particularly penguins and other coastal bird species. Established in 1968, SANCCOB operates primarily along South Africa’s coastline and is internationally recognised for its efforts in rescuing and rehabilitating seabirds affected by oil spills, entanglement, and other threats.

Key Aspects of SANCCOB:

  1. Seabird Rehabilitation – SANCCOB’s primary mission is to rescue and rehabilitate injured, sick, and oiled seabirds. The organisation has a world-class facility where thousands of birds, particularly African penguins, are treated each year. The centre provides medical care, cleaning from oil contamination, and rehabilitation before releasing the birds back into their natural habitats.

  2. Conservation of Penguins – SANCCOB plays a vital role in the conservation of the African penguin, which is listed as Endangered. Through their rehabilitation efforts, breeding programmes, and public education, SANCCOB contributes significantly to the preservation of these iconic seabirds.

  3. Response to Oil Spills – SANCCOB is a key player in South Africa’s response to oil spills, providing emergency services to clean and rehabilitate oiled seabirds. They work closely with environmental agencies to address the immediate impacts of oil spills on bird populations.

  4. Education & Awareness – SANCCOB runs educational campaigns to raise public awareness about the threats facing seabirds, such as pollution, climate change, and habitat destruction. They also offer school and community outreach programmes to inspire action for bird conservation.

  5. Research & Breeding Programs – The organisation conducts important research into seabird health, behaviour, and breeding patterns, with a focus on creating sustainable populations of African penguins. They are also involved in captive breeding efforts aimed at increasing penguin numbers.

  6. Volunteer Opportunities – SANCCOB offers opportunities for the public to get involved through volunteering. Volunteers assist with bird care, rehabilitation, educational activities, and fundraising efforts.

  7. Fundraising & Donations – As a non-profit, SANCCOB relies on public support, donations, and fundraising efforts to continue its important work. Many visitors, including tourists and animal lovers, contribute to the cause through donations or by adopting a penguin.

SANCCOB is one of South Africa’s leading conservation organisations, dedicated to the protection and rehabilitation of seabirds, particularly in the face of environmental threats.
